Just a block from my hotel was the U.S. Marine Corps
War Memorial, better known as the Iwo Jima Memorial. Six-times-life-size,
the statue depicts six soldiers raising an American flag over the Japanese-held
island of Iwo Jima on 19 February 1945, in one of the final assaults of
World War II. Based on a Pulitzer Prise winning photograph of thescene restaged
the following day, the statue by Navy sculptor Felix W. De Weldon looks
impressive as you drive by on the George Washington Parkway. |

This is a picture of the Potomac River just north
of the city. Driving along the George Washington Parkway there are a number
of very nice stops with senic overlooks. I didn't get very may pictures of New York becaue I was too busy making my way through the traffic. |
